In October 2010 the Egyptian Government founded the ‘ Special School Safaga for Children with a Mental Handicap ‘ in Safaga, a seaside town on the Red Sea South of Hurghada in Egypt. Purpose of the Ministry of Education is, in addition to education, to strive for acceptance of people with a mental handicap there to date these persons and their family are shunned or ostracized by the Egyptian society. Every school day there are some forty children between 5 and 17 years with mental retardation, autism and Down syndrome attending the lessons.
